Online since 2016, the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on copyright have been a successful EU initiative from the EUIPO’s Observatory. The FAQs provide answers to 15 of the most common questions European consumers have on copyright in the digital environment.

‘How do I know whether a work is offered legally online?’ ‘Am I infringing copyright if I publish photos on social media?’These, and other FAQs, respond to uncertainties consumers might have by giving an overview of what copyright protects and allows in the European Union. Answers are given for all EU Member States. They are available in English and in at least one official language of each respective Member State. They are reviewed regularly to keep them up to date.

To reach more European consumers and ensure smoother navigation, this initiative underwent a profound modernisation. The web page was entirely revamped with new visuals, a new presentation video, shorter videos illustrating the different copyright questions and an interactive EU map so users can select their answers per country, among many other great features.

So, if you still have doubts about what you can or cannot do when using copyright-protected content, such as music or film, on the internet, in your country, or any other EU country, please visit our new web page and enjoy your copyright journey. And don’t forget to spread the news!

Moreover, European teachers (and students) are also getting answers to their copyright questions. As an extension to this initiative, the Observatory is launching the new web page ‘FAQs on copyright for teachers’.
