The winners of the design competition "RoheAsi" were announced
The Estonian Designers' Union and the City of Tallinn announced the winners of the design competition "RoheAsi" for environmentally friendly souvenirs.
In the category Sümboolne RoheAsi (Symbolic GreenThing), the first place went to the beeswax food towel (Maret Sikstus) and the second place went to the stone card pocket Seif, authors high school students Arti Henri Lukk, Sten Ingerainen and Joosep Lukin.
In the Esinduslik RoheAsi (Representative GreenThing) category, soap base ZEN (Anne-Liis Leht) won and brooch MULD (Kristiina Laurits) took second place.
In the category Väärikas RoheAsi (Dignified GreenThing), the Atmosphere Deviser (Airike Altnurme) and the KIRA sandals made of recycled car tires (Sirli Ratasepp) were the two best works.
The People's Choice Award went to the Estonian limestone bottle holder Balance (Valdi Lootus, Teele Tuuna), which received the more than 300 votes.
Purchase prize of the Estonian Design House was awarded to the Sutu coffee cup made of reed (Pavel Sidorenko) and the Cardholder (Jegor Mljavov) made of recycled plastic bottle caps.
"People like to give and receive gifts, but it is even better if these gifts are also useful. Thank you to all the designers who lead by example in sustainable design and production. I am proud that so many practical things are being done in Estonia, which are also beautiful and which have not created too much harm for the world around us," said Deputy Mayor Joosep Vimm, who presented the People's Choice Award.
"I am pleased to say that the green, environmental friendly theme has become important in Estonia's designers' work. In the case of semi-handicraft products, environmental friendliness is easier to implement, but it is especially good if the mass product can also be produced in an environmentally friendly way, ” said Ilona Gurjanova, President of the Estonian Designers' Union.
The design competition "RoheAsi" for souvenirs produced with environmentally friendly and sustainable principles by the Estonian Designers' Union and Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023 took place from March to mid-May. It received 41 entries in three categories. The prize fund was € 9,200.
RoheAsi invited professionals (designers, artists, etc.) to create environmentally friendly products that are usable in everyday life, yet stylish, innovative and of high aesthetic value, and that incorporate the principles of environmental sustainability (reuse, reuse, circular economy), practicality and longevity.
The competition was open to new initiatives and ideas to promote and support an environmentally friendly way of life among different social groups. It hoped to find smart solutions and designs (including for official souvenirs) related to the focus themes of Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023: inclusive city, smart city, sustainable city, learning city.
The competition continued the initiative of the Estonian Designers' Union to find products for which there is a significant demand and is a continuation of the competition series, within which the best SmallThing, the best Men'sThing and the best Children'sThing have already been selected.
For the European Green Capital 2023, Tallinn has set the goal of improving the quality of life of its citizens and creating an environmentally friendly city with a better living environment and urban space, which also has sustainable management.
Tallinn wishes to involve its communities more in the planning of the city, to find ways to support and implement green innovation, to develop carbon-neutral mobility and the circular economy, and to help city's residents better understand the importance of nature protection.
