Biography
Teodor Kirilov was a student at the Sofia High School of Mathematics when in 2021 he won the special award of the European Center for Synchrotron Radiation for the project "Image Analysis of Single DNA Molecules". This happened at the “hybrid edition” of the prestigious competition for young scientists EUCYS, when Theodor, together with three of his colleagues - pupils and students from Bulgaria - won a record number of prizes.
Even as a student, Theodor was already writing software for the Institute of Molecular Biology that analyzes single DNA molecules. He has also been involved in bioinformatics and won the "Young Talent" award of the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science, which opened the door for him to participate in the European competition for young scientists. The project had also been awarded the prize of the Student Institute of Mathematics and Informatics.
Although still very young, from the position of his experience Teodor advises those younger than him, who are eager to do science in Bulgaria:
If they are interested in doing scientific research, they should contact scientific institutions that offer projects to work on. And many institutes will not refuse to involve them. They should have the courage to deal with this type of development.
Theodor chose the direction of his future development already as a child when he was admitted to the Sofia High School of Mathematics. And today, he has written in his CV development of software tools for the study of DNA replication, which are actively used by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
