Biography
Estonian screenwriter and director Oskar Lehemaa was born in Tallinn but grew up in Pärnu and studied audiovisual media at the Baltic Institute of Film, Media, Arts and Communication. For a while he did various jobs in the film industry - assistant director, director, project manager and partner at Mollusk Production, Caviar Productions, Cuba Films, Nafta Films and Kinosaurus Film, and even had a brief career in the Estonian Army.
Oskar has a variety of preferences for genre, but the truly distinctive feature of his works is the specific humorous touch. His debut film as a director was Karv (‘Bad Hair’, 2019) was a horror and won him the award for best short at the Fantastic Fest fantasy film festival in Texas. In the Vanamehe animated feature (The Old Man Movie, 2019) he was involved as a co-writer/director.
Lehemaa is associated with several film festivals. In 2008–2009 he was responsible for the logistics of film copies at the Sleepwalkers student and short film festival and in 2010 he was the organizer of special events at the Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival (HÕFF) and was also a member of the jury of the competition program of the Riga International Film Festival 2Annas.
His latest work is Beyond the Dark (2022).
