Hayes & Y

Biography

At the beginning they felt like making even a little progress just takes forever and playing for 30 people was already a massive event. That was back in 2011 and when they finally found their drummer Georgi who was significantly more experienced, the band was ready to move to the next level. The first recognition comes when the guitarist for the Bulgarian cult band “Ostava” took Hayes for his new label. However, the Bulgarian stage appeared narrow for their ambition, particularly for the style they have chosen.

The boys move to London which, in their own words, “was an instant reality check as it shattered all of our illusions pretty quickly”. But they also met Dennis, their current Finnish drummer. Yet, London was hell for them, as they say it is for any artist, so on they moved again, this time to Manchester. Four years with a studio in the living room and a vocal booth in the closet, much to the annoyance of the neighbours, produced and recorded Always So Simple, The Feeling, Blue and many more, up until AP/NP.

Actually, the four guys of the band have assimilated quickly, becoming a part of their new country’s scene and taking shows at some of the Britain’s best-loved venues in their stride, including the likes of London’s Dublin Castle, and Manchester’s iconic Night & Day Café.

The debut EP came out beginning of 2015, followed in September by The Only Thing Worse Than an Overpriced Bottle of Water. Their style is defined as indie pop-rock, clearly influenced by the likes of Kasabian (whom they were fortunate enough to support at Spirit of Burgas), Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon. A clear distinguishing element however seems to be an energetic and witty songwriting of their own.

Their 2017 single Always So Simple, Always So Cold received strong support from BBC and reached 13th spot in Spotify Top 50 UK Viral chart. The Sinclair EP was released in the same year. In 2018, Clash Magazine praised the band’s single BLUE calling it “an immediate, addictive track that also manages to retain its subtlety, a moody dancefloor burner with a killer chorus”. Another single Disaster came out in 2019.

The band built their fan base in Manchester. Defying the typicality of Manchester’s beloved synth-pop, Hayes & Y display their unique flair in their latest release, The Times, which is the first of three singles, setting the bar seriously high.
