Biography
The Portuguese singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist Sara Alexandra Lima Tavares was born in Lisbon of Cape Verdean descent and makes world music.
Music was in her blood since young age and in 1994 she won the national television song contest Chuva de Estrelas, performing Whitney Houston's "One Moment in Time".
That same year, she also won the Festival da Canção, which sent her to the Eurovision Song Contest at the age of 16. Her first album was recorded with the gospel choir Shout! and the second, "Mi Ma Bô", was a kind of Afro-pop-soul fusion sound that would reach the Gold Disc.
Her third album Balance reached worldwide fame, disclosed her unique sensibility, and blended the sounds of Europe and Africa. For it, Tavares was nominated a New Artist for BBC World Music Awards in 2007.
Two years later followed Xinti and in 2017 Fitxadu that increased the electronic and urban sound and was nominated for Grammy Lations.
Sara Tavares won the award for Best Female Voice at the Cape Verde Music Awards in 2011.
