On September 3, 2022 Semperoper Dresden will open its 2022-23 season with the premiere of “Chasing Waterfalls,” a multimedia program which centers around, and was partially composed and written by, artificial intelligence, reported OperaWire.
The work will see a computer-generated algorithm perform a number of roles, such as supporting the singers with its “voice” in real time, as well as perform the main part of the piece itself. The project is spearheaded by director and media artist Sven Soren Beyer with Berlin arts collective phase7 performing.arts. Other collaborators include writer Christiane Neudecker who created the libretto and experimented with AI text generators, video artists Frieder Weiss and Ployz, and Berlin design studio Eigengrau.
Artificial intelligence will sing its own part in the opera. His voice will be created from recordings of the voice of Norwegian singer Eir Inderhaug, who will play the lead role. In the story, she moves to a virtual world where she meets clones of him, reported Eprimefeed.
A waterfall and an eight-meter sculpture made of LED panels, symbolizing artificial intelligence, will be used in the staging of the opera. Likewise, the attending public will be invited to participate in the creation of the scenery.
Previously, the theme of artificial intelligence appeared in the opera “Love for Three Zuckerbrins” based on the novel of the same name by Viktor Pelevin, which was performed at the Natalia Sats Children’s Musical Theater. Its main theme is the painful collision of human consciousness and artificial intelligence.
