How many times do we hear stories about how an ingenious solution to solve one challenge ends up being a perfect solution for something the inventor had never thought about? This is how South African researcher Amir Patel’s fascination with the speed and maneuverability of the cheetah led him to the health care arena. In devising methods to understand the way cheetah’s move, he has come up with a more affordable and accessible mechanism to support the rehabilitation of patients suffering injury or neurological disease.

Young (IP) love: why and how IP matters for youth

In ancient Greek mythology, the goddess of youth and the youngest of all divinities was Hebe. The daughter of Zeus and Hera, Hebe was the cupbearer for the goddesses and gods. She served them with ambrosia which, in turn, conferred longevity or even immortality on those who consumed it. Like the divinities of Mount Olympus, intellectual property (IP) is constantly being fed by younger generations of designers, creators, and inventors. It is therefore particularly relevant that 2022 is the European Year of Youth and that this year’s World Intellectual Property Day (26 April 2022) focuses on ‘IP and Youth Innovating for a Better Future’ and explores how innovative, energetic and creative minds are driving positive change.

Significantly, this late 2020 assessment is USD15 billion higher than the one made ahead of the pandemic in March.

This mechanism allows the expropriation of IP rights, similar to a compulsory licence.

The most popular show in Netflix history, “Squid Game,” earned an estimated $900 million for the streaming company. And the producers are not stopping there. They are gearing up for even more revenue as they look towards season two and have secured more than two dozen trademarks for the property as they tee up a range of merchandising and licensing deals.
