Tõnis Reitalu, a sixth-grader at Lümanda Basic School, was awarded the WIPO Schoolchildren’s Prize as well as the Estonian Patent Office’s Special Prize. The name of her work was “Smart mailbox”.

Tiina Lillepool, a member of the evaluation committee of the Estonian Patent Office, said: “The work stood out because the issue affects many people. In order to save money, mail will not be brought to your door in many places, and you will have to walk further to empty the mailbox. It is also possible that sometimes the newspaper will be delivered later in the evening, so knowing whether and when there’s a cause to go to the mailbox is useful.”

Aare Abrams, another member of the committee, added: “It wasn’t just a concept, but a comprehensive solution with information on how to make it and where to get the details.”

Director General of the Estonian Patent Office Mr Margus Viher handed over the award.
